Jesus, I never realized sabots were that expensive. :wtc:

The gold ones in the middle = Winchester Supreme Partition Gold = $18.99/5
The red tipped ones = Hornady SST = $11.99/5

    :ugh:

I believe so. They claim the wad won't seperate correctly/reliably with a smooth bore.

Winchesters disclaimer - 'NOTE: For optimum performance, Winchester recommends using product in fully rifled slug barrels.'
Hornadys disclamer - 'FOR RIFLED BARRELS ONLY'

BTW, I think you can buy slugs designed for smooth bores. However, I don't think they've got the reach that a rifled variant will have.

Yea, the slugs you bought are meant specifically for a rifled barrel, which is what they were designed for. If you shoot them through a smooth bore you're wasting your time and money, since they're more than likely shoot like shit.

And aren't premium bullets expensive? :o

Rhetorical question really, but I agree, I'm always surprised by the cost of slugs considering that I use some of the exact same bullets in my muzzle loader and pay considerably less. And while it's not loaded ammunition, the bullet is where most of the cost is.
