The time has come to replace my DSLR equipment that was stolen on my trip to Norway. I am drooling over a 5D and a good friend of mine wants to sell me his. 9500 shots, grip, 3 canon batteries and one generic battery for $2k. Sounds like a good deal to me. I know Canon rates the shutter for 100k shots, but I'm interested in how long yours lasted. Also, how much does it cost to get the shutter repaired when it fails?

they can go at any point, 10k, 50k who knows. 9500 in reality is nothing if its been well cared for. a new shutter is only $300 so its not like you throw it away when it goes.

I've seen a few 5Ds really cheap on POTN even a few 1D mkII for less than the price of a new 5D

the price isnt that stupendous. a grip and 2 OEM batts is what...260 or so?

shutter life is an average of what they rate it. 100k isnt a definitive number. there are shutters that will die within its first click, and there are some that will keep ticking over 300k. i know a friend of mine had a 10d that was rated at like 50k shutter actuations, but kept ticking for over 4x that.
