Ive been shooting a 20D for about 3+ years alot. started with it for sports(mtb, bmx, etc) but used it a lot recently for art/travel/scenic shots

been saving up for 5D2 and the 24-105 for a bit now, got about $2400 so far, and would sell my 20D and crop lenses.

debating now if its worth it to drop such a chunk of change on it. it would be a serious investment, and im kinda doubting i need it, when the money could go somewhere better(possible build a desktop, and move on from my 15"mbp ive had for 3 years)

whats the general consensus of the 50D? Obviously the 5DII is phenomenal, but i dont think its amazing for sports, who knows. it definitely would cost me a lot more money in the longrun buying full frame lenses, but obviously resale is very good.

    what i have now:
    20D w/bg
    11-16/2.8 Tokina
    28-75/2.8 Tamron
    50/1.8 Canon
    70-200/4L Canon
would be selling 11-16, and 28-75. looking to buy the 5dII, with 24-105L, and also pick up a used 17-40L.

if i bought the 50D, id buy it with the 17-85 and keep everything i have but the 20D.

    Ideas? opinions?
    thanks

I dunno man, sounds like you're pretty seriously into this.. 50d is certainly a step up, but I think you'll be kicking yourself if you don't go all the way and get the 5D II... just do it dude..

think of all those noise free shots at ISO 1600 :hsd:

seriously? i would choose quality glass and image quality over the LCD any day of the week.

    5dmkii > 40D > 50D

I can understand the want for the 5dmkii, but do you need it? Your workflow will have to change dramatically, if you are thinking you need a new desktop now with your 20d files, your computer will chug with those 5dmkii files. Choice is ultimately yours, but to me, its always best to buy the gear that is within your style.

Is the auto focus any faster on the 50D? Is the 5DII AF as slow as they say?

40d and 50d af is faster than the 5dmkii. And to me the AF system of the 5dmkii is not up to snuff with todays technology

If you're going to use it for sports i'd say go for the 40d. you'll save a bunch and its more then capable for using in "art".

or rent the 2 and give it a go. you'll definately know what fits your application by using it.

i don't know why people bash the 5D MKII AF system. the only time I have a problem is in the nightclub-type lighting, which the 1D MKII can't even get an AF lock without a speedlite AF assist.

I've used the 5D MKII for panning and I got a keeper rate of about 80%. My keeper rate with the 1D MKII is over 90% (AI servo).

The LCD is worth the upgrade alone. I've been debating on selling the 1D MKII for the 50D lol I hate the LCD on both the 1d mKII and 5D MKI after using the new LCD on the 5D MKII

I also don't have a problem with the AF system aside from like you mentioned, a nightclub-type light setting.

Everyone? No no, I think you're blowing things out of proportion because you simply don't know. I have used one a few times and never noticed any sort of slow or inaccurate focusing. The only people I have seen complain are people who blame the camera for bad/boring shots and not poor camera skills. What it comes down to is you need to look at a few full resolution 5d2 photos shot with good glass; they are buttery smooth and dead sharp. Then there's a video mode which is amazing, too. But, really, you should not take my or anyone else's opinion. You should try to find someone with a few 5d2 and maybe a 1d and see if you can shoot a few frames with them and make your opinion.

Yeah, for the performance you get out of the 5D2, the 1Ds3 should come down in price by half. At least IMO. Not sure what other benefits of the 1Ds3 are over a gripped 5D2 though.

AF system, weather sealed are the first two that come to mind, +/- 2 exposure compensation vs +/- 3 EC

Don't be stupid, sell all of your gear and buy 5D2 and 24-70L.
