My friend bought this 500mm Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha A100 A200 A350 A700 A900 Recently

Now that he has put it on his Sony A100 camera using the T-ring adapter, the camera display states "No lens attached."

I see the contacts inside the camera do not touch the adaptor, but being a manual lens only, do they need to?

My Canon at home uses a similar t-ring on my big telescope, which in no way interacts with the camera, except to serve as a window.

If you can control the lens manually then no you don't need to make electrical contact. Though unless it also has manual aperture control its basically just a telescope.

    That's what I figured.

I think it may be either poor manufacture on the adapter or it is the incorrect adapter for the camera.
