Field and Stream has a list of the "50 Best Guns Ever Made". The list seems to mainly be comprised of older shotguns and rifles with a few old handguns. A few of the models are still around today though (Remington 870 comes to mind). If anyone wants the list I'll type it out. I couldn't find it online.

Side note: If the Rem. 870 is on there, everyone said the Winchester 1300 was a very comparable gun. Is this true? Just curious as it wasn't on the list and I was looking at a 1300 over an 870.

I want an Ultra Light Arms Model 20, they're made across the river from me :hs: Nosler used one of their actions to test bullets and fired over a million rounds before retiring the action. Now I just need to save $2500 :o

Why the hell wouldn't the M1 be up there? It can be used for hunting...

There would be little of the deer left, but you could hunt wiht it.

Because the M1 has never in the least been considered a hunting rifle.

Also, how does .308 = tearing a deer up?

If it wasn't for most of those boring hunting guns you wouldn't have your super cool, essentially useless to the average man, rifles of today :hsugh:

The Gyrojet is on there because it was about as inaccurate as you can get, and from a ballistic standpoint you'd be better off walking over and punching the person/anima/whatever you're trying to shoot. :o

How was the list compiled? People voted on guns, group of people discussed, or did they come up with a list of requirements a gun must meet?

You don't need a 30-06 to kill a squirrel or prairie dog. It's a good small game hunting rifle.

How do you hunt? Empty the whole clip or magazine (Which M1 are you talking about?) into the deer. 30-06 and .308 are common hunting rounds for deer...

IIRC they asked people to send in their top 5 guns and explain why but he also used his gun knowledge to compile the list. Here's what it says in the issue:

"This is a subjective ranking in order, but all the firearms have several things in common: All are superlative desgins; all were chosen without regard to price; all were commercial successes to a greater or lesser degree; and almost all were influential on the design of other guns. You'll notice that there are no military or target arms here (with a few exceptions, for reasons explained). We decided to limit the list to hunting firearms, which is what F&S is about. In making my selection, I've limited myself to the past 100 years or so, going back to the introduction of smokeless powder, so these are guns of the modern era."

the 50 best guns ever made does not include the AR-15 series, AK series and 1911 series weapons? THE most prominent designs of the 20th century, most widely copied, improved upon, upgraded and customized?

I was speaking of your comment about not much deer being left if you hunted with an M1... I was wondering how that can be because a 30-06 and a .308 are common deer hunting rounds. I'd gladly take an M1 out to hunt deer and there would be plenty left...

But it wasn't designed for it, and it contributed nothing major, if anything, to hunting rifles. :o

But yes, they do rock :hs:
