Excluding monthly payments, insurance, and gas (petrol); what is the general cost of ownership of one of these badboys? :dunno: (Thinking of finally taking the plunge and getting one)

    - Tune-up
    - Clutch
    - Service
    - Oil consumption (I hear Jettas are terrible)
    - ... etc

I know parts/service in general will be more expensive when compared to something like a Honda. How about known/common problem? I hear the moonroof fails a lot. I know there are a lot of 3er owners out there.

Are you planning on buying new or used?

    Used.

But I think this question is pretty general. New or used, a tune-up is a tune-up and the clutch will always need to be replaced. It just comes sooner if I buy used.

What does a Jetta's oil consumption have to do with a 330?

    There really is no Tune-up...

every 30K miles, you will need an inspection. Maybe $300-400 each time. Clutch should last a long time on an E46. I have yet to hear anyone on any boards with a worn E46 clutch. Guess $700 for a cluch with labor.

A few 330s have burned oil, but most won't after the first 10K miles. Other than that, just do oil changes more often than the computer tells you, and you will be ok...

Oil consumption wasn't an issue until I heard about the Jetta. Apparently, it consumed oil very quickly and this took a lot of new owners by surprise. I'm hoping that this is not a trend among German automakers.

    Wow, pricey inspection.

As for the clutch, yeah, e46 are still new so the clutch won't be replaced for a while.

Check out Edmunds.com - they estimate the 5-speed 330i to cost about 60 cents a mile.

My 330 was a pleaseure to own. If you get one that is still within warranty, you will not have to pay much for maintenance. Also, if you can do you own oil changes that will save some $$ too. All in all, I would say that it is a fairly reasonable car to own for a BMW. Go for it, man!! :bigthumb:

Cost of ownership on new to slightly new (1-2 years old) BMWs is very good!

I'm on my 4th one right now.

    Tuneup - Maintenance Schedule every 15k miles: Insp 1 = $300-$400 and Insp 2 = $500-$700

Inspection 2 including changing all the fluids and a TOTAL tuneup. This is every 30k miles

New clutch goes for around $650-$800 installed.

Oil changes are as usual, my dealership charges $24.95 for oil changes.

You can query some guys on my website who own E36s and E46s - www.euroteknik.com

    Enjoy!
