Anyone have experience with this stuff?

Pretty sure my serotonin levels are below normal...My mood is shitty, sleep, etc. Depression is in my family, my dad had it pretty bad. I've been on an SSRI before but I didn't like the effects. Has anyone successfully used it to boost their mood?

I used it and all I got was "404 Error: Mood not found."

5-HTP or tryptophan intake hasn't been shown to influence tryptophan levels in the brain, to my knowledge.
The only "alternative" solutions I've saw for mood were omega-3, light therapy and artificial sunrise (it was more for energy though). A correlation with carb intake has been shown in some studies but it was mitigated.

The only thing that has ever helped my bouts of mild to moderate depression is regular exersize.

I also quit drinking when I'm in a workout program and that helps even out my moods. Drinking makes me happy when I drink but more depressed/irritable the rest of the time.

Good luck man, it sucks to feel shitty for no real reason. :hs:

EDIT: Though everyone has told me it's placebo, when I don't get enough carbs I become so irritable and get a horrible temper.

I forgot about exercise being a good way to improve mood :noes:
I know that in one study they compared regular jogging to antidepressants and over a 1-year span, they both were as effective. After 1 year though, antidepressants kinda lost their effect and jogging was found to be better after that. Plus, instead of having sucky side-effects, people got healthier. The effects with weight training are thought to be similar.

I bought some 5-HTP on my last run to the Vitamin Store - I'm most of the way through the 60 serving bottle (5mg per pill, once a day, as I recall), and I can not discern any negative nor positive effects.

I won't be purchasing another bottle.

never tried it...but working out helps with my mood...even when I got PMS. I have another few methods of dealing with depression too, tho. Not drug related. Thank God for them...
