Neither, use handgun or shotgun rounds. Rifle rounds will kill your next next next next door neighbor.

I LOVE rifle rounds for home defense. Call me crazy but I think the shotgun is dated and a weapon for sportman, breeching, prisions, and fun. If I were going to rob your house I'd damn well have body armor to do it. Most crooks don't but if you're having to pull the trigger you're already having a statistically improbable day so why not plan for the worst. It doesn't mean you need to use .50bmg or fmj 7.62x39. Past that anything that you shoot thats going to do enough to bad guy tissue is going to puncture drywall easily be it from a handgun, shotgun, or rifle.

I wouldn't use fmj of course, ballistic tip rounds in either caliber please. 5.56 is going to have less penetration through barriers than 7.62x39....both will punch plenty of dryway. 5.56 might well tumble and hit much lower a few walls later than the central mass height area you were aiming at before. 5.56 to me is probably your best best for home defense.

seriously i wouldnt use 7.62 for home defense. It can go through walls and youll hit stuff that could be bad lol. Cars, homes, People other then the bad guy. Really you just need a cheap 12ga. Or maybe a handgun if you wanT
