Who here in WMD has an AK chambered in 5.45? The ammo stockpile thread got me thinking about ammo prices and 5.45 is ridiculously cheap compared to 5.56. What do you guys think of this round in the AK?

Do they even make a 5.45 upper? I do want to own an AK variant at some point, and the price of ammo right now gives me as good of a reason as any.

I have a couple ak's in 5.45, I like it better then x39 for most purposes.

They do make it a 5.45 AR upper but they want to much for it IMO. You can get an AK and case of ammo for the cost of the ar upper fuck that.

Thats what I was thinking in the first place. Plus I would like to have some AK variant at some point.

It works..... And it's cheap. What exactly were you wanting to know?

I've had a couple before, and am looking to pick up another to take advantage of the cheap ammo prices.

EDIT* * Yeah, fuck that S&W upper. I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig there, especially at the rediculous amount of money they are charging for those things.

Just your experiences with the round, availability of ammo, ballistics ect. Things of that nature.

I've shot it from Polish, Romanian, and Bulgarian flavored AK's. Nothing to report different from the 7.62 offerings (as far as respective rifle quality goes). Mags were cheap and plentiful then (year ago or so), now they are more expensive, but still easy to come by.

Ammo is easily available through many channels, and there are several different types. I've heard through distributors (AIM, J&G, RSR) that there is no worries about ammo drying up anytime soon, and S&W's entry into the game (AR upper)confirms this for me.

Performance is...... same/same. It's a smaller AK round. Statistically runs better than most 5.56 guns in my experience (mag related problems with 5.56 AK's, though this is not always a rule as certain guns run fine). Less recoil, thats about the only thing you'd notice. As far as ballistics.... I didn't/don't care. There are far more limiting factors here than any supposed intrinsic accuracy advantage/disadvantage. Within normal carbine ranges, and within general design parameters, the guns perform same/same with any other AK and some cheaper AR's.

Buy one and shoot the shit out of it... it's just a normal AK that's cheaper to feed.

5.45 kicks ass. If you have the cash to stock up, go for it.

No more $5.99 NIW mag's but they're still pretty close to x39 mag prices.

I love my WASR-2, I really want to get an SBR'd krink next. I've shot 5.45 and 7.62 and they're both pretty comparable as far as I know. I haven't shot anything other than paper with it, but accuracy is good, recoil is almost non-existent, etc. Do yourself a favor and get one. :)

I would be slightly interested if this caliber could be loaded for, or some manner of hunting rounds could be easily gotten for it.
