I'm thinking about getting a 40D, but cash wise I can only swing the body with the 24-whatever IS lens and a couple accessories (grip, cards, etc). Or I can get an XTi and more/better glass, which I know is more important.

I shoot mostly car stuff, so wide is good (since I'm often up close to the car), but I could get by with the kit lens on the 40D for now (only 2 car shows left this year), and then get some better glass before the NAIAS in January.

Or I could get a lesser body and better glass now.

I think you mean 28-135 IS lens

the only 24-whatever IS lens that I know of is the 24-105 f/4L IS.. and that wouldn't really be a bad only lens

used 20/30d and better glass. i started with a xt and made the jump to a 30d after the first couple times i spent more than 30 minutes with my camera in my hand. the ergonomics of the xt/i are complete shit compared to the 20/30d.

I live in the middle of nowhere, so used stuff is coming from craigslist or ebay, and I'm not so trusting on that stuff.

Not to say I have not looked, but the closest used 40D on craigslist is almost 4 hours away.

And from what I've read, the kit lens on the 40D is decent. My two concerns are that I want to go wider, and the Sigma 10-20 would be nice to fix that, and I also use more zoom, though I have not really looked for a lens for that.

But if I get the 40D + the Sigma, now I'm up to $1700 or so, and I still have not bought a decent memory card, flash, or grip (all of which I want/need)

use their for sale forums for some deals on used equipment. with a budget of 1500, i would go with a used 30d (about 650ish), tamron 17-50 (about 350ish), canon 70-200 f/4 (about 425ish), then pick up a couple decent mem cards. this should get you a pretty good all around kit. if you know what you are going to be shooting, then you could gear your kit more towards a specific use.

if you really can't/won't buy used..

you could get a 40D body with 17-40/4L for about $1600..
    or a 30D/XTi body with 24-70/2.8L for like $1600-1700..
or 40D 28-135 kit with a lot of accessories for under $1500..

30D is out. I've had so many dust problems with my d40, I refuse to buy a camera w/o a dust removal system, even if it is a good deal (i.e. 30D).

    I'm 80% 40D, 20% XTi.

If I can get by with the kit lens on the 40D, I'm sold on it. And I hate to pass on a 40D for an XTi where I can get better glass, but be less pleased with the camera.

    :)
just got a 12% coupon in the mail for best buy. 40D just became much more likely.

Ha! I got the same one in the mail too! Plus a bunch of other 10% off coupons for some other goodies I've had my eye on.

And yes, I'd recommend the 40D as well. (40D crew!) :wavey: I actually use the kit lens as an everyday walkaround lens most of the time anyways.

BTW, I bought my father-in-law an XTi and handled it for a few days to teach him the basics of shooting with a DSLR. It felt tiny compared to my 40D (still capable of great shots). But there a quite a few times where I was having a little difficulty setting up the camera to get a good exposure. Maybe I'm too used to the controls and features on my 40D that I've taken it for granted? Afterwards, I was glad to go back to my camera.

    I'd rather have 40D + 17-40/4L or 40D + tamron 17-50 than 40D + 28-135.

I spent 2 years with 28 as my widest focal length.. on a crop body, it blows.

my opinion, go with a 40d...

i started with the xti...i am not a pro at all, no where near it...but the feel of the 40d made me upgrade. after holding the 40d and the xti...the xti felt like a toy to me...

    just my opinion.

    working on a deal to get a 40D w/ the 28-135 kit lens plus either a canon 10-22, 17-40L, or sigma 10-20.

awesome, the 10-20 is sweet (I own it) but I hear many good things about the 10-22.

either way, having an UWA is needed on a crop body
