How much would the difference (image quality wise) be between shooting with a 40D & a 450D, using the same lens, under the same conditions with the same settings on a bright day?

Almost none at everything except 1600ISO. What you get with the XXD series over the XXXD series is ergonomics, the XXXD series is unusable without a grip IMO, controls (the wheel), and a/f speed which is still largely dependent on your lens.

do you need a faster shutter than 1/4000? that is the XSi limit.

are you using off camera lighting? Your flash sync is slower on the 450

but i thought the pics from 450D were more "focus", based on my experience

The difference between my 400d and my 40d was mainly the ergonomics and the 6.5 fps vs the 3...

That being said, I love my 40d and would hate having to go back to the 400d.

maybe if focus speed is a factor, i find the 40D focuses better than the 450D

That too, except the 400d in my case. Was really not so much the focus speed (although it was worlds better) that made a difference in my case, but the lack of seeking and actually locking a focus in low light that made a difference in my case.

In dark gyms with my 400d it would hunt all day, where with my 40d it locked almost instantly. Makes me wonder what a 1Dx would be like.

the x0D controls are about a billion times better than the xx0D controls.

    I can't use a Rebel at all after using a 30D for 2 1/2 years.

I don't have any problems with the ergonomic and controls on my 450D :dunno:

If I'm upgrading for new camera it will be for the image quality.

Try an XXD, it'll be a world of difference.

I should just go to the store and hold one I guess. I doubt it will feel so good that I want to upgrade :o
Also, the 40D seems a bit outdated, my 450D even got more pixels & bigger screen too I think. Also the 40D is heavier than the 450D.

more megapixels and a bigger screen should be the last of your worries :hsugh:

especially when comparing an entryrange slr to a midrange one

40d is heavier because it's bigger, has more parts, and uses less plastic.

Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work you can always hit them with it.

In the end of the day, the image quality is basically the same. So just updating for better handling and ISO seems a bit :ugh:

...my 50d has less noise at 3200iso, than my 350d at 800iso... it's a huge difference.
