I just started deadlifting in November and I was doing 155x5 while learning the form and stuff.

I stuck with the 5x5 routine and tonight my last set was 270x5 and it was ridiculously easy so I decided to see what I could pull. I pulled 355 and it felt good. Next month I'll hopefully rip 405 off the floor! :bigthumb:

Is it a good idea to pull that much w/out a belt?

Depends on the person. I wear a belt, others on here don't.

Ronnie Coleman wears a belt, gloves, and straps when he is deadlifting so just let that be said before the "belts are for pussies" crew barges in.

I think I've worn a belt once while deadlifting, maxed at 425 a few months ago.

I've pulled to 455 without a belt. Never tried to lift more than that :noes:

I don't know if it's a good idea, but I did that much for a while without a belt.

I now use 4 plates as the point at which I put my belt on.

A belt isn't going to save you from any injuries...

    Whats a good deadlift for a 6'1" 175 pound guy? I started deadlifting recently as well. Today I finished a 5x5 at 5 x 225 pounds.

congrats, you'll see 4 plates soon. a belt is a very useful tool if you know how and when to use it. at 4 plates, it may be neccesary IMO.
