I found an ad for a used Canon 10D with lenses (doesn't say what kind) for $400/neg. Sound like a decent deal? I'm going to call tonight but I assume it'll have the standard 18-55mm or whatever it is lens and maybe one or two others. Is there anything I should specifically check for/ask about when getting one of these used? It'll be my first SLR.

    find out what lenses

    personally I wouldn't get a 10D just because it can't use EF-S lenses

I'm not really sure if a used 10D is any better than a new XT and the kit lens for $50 more.

Is there a site that'll give me some basic information on SLR's? I don't really know what an EF-S lens is.

10D is a great camera and it's much better than a XT (IMO). However I would not pay $400 for it unless it came with nice lens.

I've seen as low as 250, 400 with grip and batteries and crap lens sounds about right

I wish the 10D could use EF-S lenses, I'd buy one for a backup body in a heartbeat :o

Can't wait for the 20Ds to get dirt cheap for this reason.

I paid 285 for my 10D. I chose it over the XT for simple comfort... it felt much better in my hands than an XT.

I picked up a 20D for $450 on Sat. It's pretty much looks/feels brand new.

400 bucks is overpriced, as a few have mentioned. It's a capable camera if you're willing to put up with the 2 second start up and image review time. It has a little more noise than the 20D, but when there's sufficient lighting, the image quality is still pretty damn good. Current prices, $200-300 tops.

I sold mine ~ 1.5 years ago for about $290-300 to an OTer.

I had a 300D which is nearly as fast as a 10D, and it drove me crazy waiting for it to wake from standby or for trying to capture a motion sequence.

I debated the 10D vs 20D and I went 20D. It's so much faster for very little more money. Trust me, it's worth it.

Is that an SAE Baja car in your avatar? I was in it when I was in school and have volunteered as a tech inspector/track worker for the last couple years.
