Those sorts of programs you either get it or you don't. It's like juggling.

I tried to use it too, and couldn't figure it out. I even used a few video tutorials and couldn't do it.

All I was trying to do to get myself to learn was to draw a 3d vase.... I had better luck in illustrator

I used to dabble in it back in HS, I made some pretty cool shit, some fat little men, a table with chairs, put a vase with flowers on top, and a room with a window.

I kinda lost interest though, because it took me forever to make even the simplest things

Lyndia.com has incredible tutorials. They may cover the basics for that.

I have a book on learning Maya I got from Amazon for $40 and it's excellent.

is this what people use to make graphics in movies? like hellboy 2? or is it like that pixar program? 3d rendered computer characters in an environment with 100,000$ lighting programs?

Shrek & Pixar movies are made on custom software.

If you go to the sites for 3DsMax (AutoDesk) or Maya (Alias) they show you where their software was used in film & tv.

what do you mean "custom software"?

like made especially for those particular movies or for that particular movie company?

For that company. From watching a few behind the scenes stuff Pixar and Dreamworks have their own 3D software as well as some off the shelf stuff used.
