My old 27" CRT TV died today so I drove around to a few stores to look at what's available. Looks like I can get a 37" LCD or a 42" plasma for pretty much the same price (around $1500-$1700). My question is which one would you get given the choice. I think the 42" might be a bit large for the room I'm putting it into since I'm going to be about 8.5" away from it. Thoughts?

And feel free to recommend some models as well. :x:

Also, is there any place I can figure out how big a TV I need based on how far away I'm going to be sitting from it?

what input signal are you going to feed it?
also, what are the native resolutions for both displays?
if your going to feed it a 480i signal (analog cable, tivo, vcr, even though it's a little less)...it will look like crap if it's a large display and you will be sitting close to it.
if your going to feed it 480p, it will look better...but it will probably look better on the lcd.
if you feed it 720p, both displays will look pretty good

who cares how far you are sitting, get the bigger one!!! You never know if you might move in the next 10 years then the 37 may be too small.

They got this new LG technology plasmas that only have one pane of glass instead of 2, lot less glare on the tv, buy that one.

Depends on what the resolutions of the two displays are.

I would pick the one with the better resolution.
