So for the past week my 360 has been freezing up with no error code and no flashing lights. I've tried disconnecting it from the internet, taking off my HDD and playing multiple games. A few minutes in each time it freezes up with little squares on the screen and there is nothing I can do except manually turn off the console.

I think I am going to have to send it in to Microsoft for them to fix it. I've had it for about 2 years now and unfortunately I am outside the standard warranty and it will cost me $100 to fix it if I list the problem as video freezing. However, if I list it as the "3 Red Lights" I can get it fixed for free. Some of my friends said that the screen freezing happens shortly before you start to see RROD, so what I want to know is if there is anything I can do to speed up the process and get to the RROD so I can get it fixed for free.

Or I guess I could just select "3 red lights" and send it in anyway.

Anyone have any experience with this? After seeing Zombieland I need to play some more L4D and I can't because of this damn freezing issue. Thanks for the help!

Pretty much the only way to do it.

You could really speed things up by putting it in a cardboard box with a hole in, stick a hairdryer in, seal around the hairdryer and turn it on while running a demanding game :naughty:

Well I mean does inducing a RROD sound like the best option for me? Has anyone else been able to deal with this freezing problem without sending it in?

Your only other option is to try the x-clamp fix but its not a guaranteed fix long term. Your best option is to rrod it and send it to microshite

Although, I have heard of people sending in theirs when it hasn't got the RRoD and they get it back repaired. Worth a go but I think they charge you for the shipping back if they don't find anything wrong with it.

Supposedly there's a Microsoft Test Disk that leaked out a couple years ago that induces RRoD. It's like a stress test disk basically.

"Ping 17 Test Media" is a confidential internal Microsoft utility
disc which was left inside an Xbox 360 when it was sent back to a
    customer after RRoD repair.

Please note that this disc will not run on iXtreme firmware as-is.
It's an exception to the SS authoring date rule and has 2nd wave
PFI/Video when iXtreme expects it to have the 1st wave versions.
This is the same reason why backups of DDR Universe (the only
other known exception to the rule) will not run on iXtreme.

If you want this disc to run on iXtreme you will need to patch the
iso with PFI_739CEAB3.bin and Video_66D0CB54.iso from the included
ind-ping-1st_wave.rar, but note that this is not the proper
PFI/Video for this disc and you should use it at your own risk.

Also, be aware that this disc will attempt an internet connection
to LIVE/MS, and will halt if it can't connect. Use at own risk!

you dont even need a towel, just stick something between the back fans to stop them from moving and then turn it on. It will Rrrod very quick

Well I got home today and was just going turn it on and leave it on for a while and as soon as I turned it on it RROD'd, lolz. So now I get to send it in to Microsoft and I'm without entertainment for like 2 weeks.

This might tempt me into renewing my WoW sub.... :noes:

I have a friend that's an electrician and he's been fixing xbox's for people for a few months now.

He told me all about the common problems and how to fix them, I don't remember any of it, but nothing seemed too hard and it sounded almost as if he found this info online somewhere.

He did mention that to fix it you can't use a soldering gun, something about wires being too thin or something I dunno.

I'd just look up with google how to fix it yourself, it can be done.

You need to reflow the solder to properly fix them like Microsoft do. It's basically an oven that heats up the solder and flows it back down the tracks on the PCB. That's what he heat gun does, but that only works for a time because a proper reflow adds more solder.
