And if it's a criteria, we'll say for a carry weapon.
.357SIG for the power.
.40S&W for cheaper ammo and more availability.
Most of the ballistics tests I saw comparing them weren't that much different, so I'm going with .40 since ammos alot cheaper.
Fo'dy because I have one
Performance wise they're roughly the same. I'd take .40 for cheaper practice.
I have a .40 and .357sig barrel for my Sig 229, I practice with cheap .40 ammo and use .357sig for home defense, etc.
I plan on geting a .357sig in the future like a Glock 33 for carry. I like the round and think ballistics on it will improve with time. I like 9mm and it seems it's like the next step.
.357Sig. It doesn't feel as "snappy" to me as .40. Not that 40 is unmanageable. 9mm has spoiled me.
i love the 357 sig. wish i could afford ammo
10mm > both of that shit
.357 > .40 But I'd still take my 9mm over both.
+1 on the .40 over the .355sig for cheaper ammo/easier to find...THATS RIGHT I SAID .355....sigs marketing dept. wont sway this man!
It's called .357sig because the ballistics are supposed to mimick the .357 Magnum.
actually your half right/half wrong....the actual bullet in a .357mag is .357 in diameter while the sig round is a std. 9mm projectile measuring .355. The developers of the sig round knew people wouldnt latch onto a name like .355sig so they chose to "round up" for marketing purposes....so you are right that they developed the round to mimic a 357mag in ballistics but its not a true 357 slug.
also, the actual ballistics comparison between the sig and magnum are somewhat different. the 357sig from what i recall reading had penetrated deeper but the wound channel was narrower than the .357mag. I may be slightly off on that...either way the .357sig round seems to be bringin home the bacon for LEO's all across the country. its proving itself effective so im not gonna bash either round cuz frankly ive never been in a real gunfight and god forbid i ever have to be. But hey it sure is fun to talk about it!
Along these same lines of thinking, could one get a 9mm barrel, a .357SIG barrel, and a .40SW barrel all for a Sig 229? Or are just the .357 and .40 compatible with each other?
Only the .357sig and .40 barrels are interchangeable. You cannot take a 229 9mm barrel and put it in a .357sig or .40 229, the feed ramps and other things are far different among other things and it just won't work. Bar-Sto makes a 9mm conversion kit for .357sig/.40 229's for like $225 but for that much you might as well just spend a little more and buy a whole new used Sig 229 in 9mm for $349 from CDNN.
Have to love those police trade in SIG's. I am looking for a 226.
