    Does this intrigue anybody else?

It's been mentioned here and I confirmed it with a little googling that the GMC Canyon will get a V8 next year.

The Hummer H3 is getting the 5.3, so the GMC will probably get it too, but even the base 4.8 is no slouch in a small pick-up.

    GMC's base 4.8 Liter = 295 HP SAE @ 5,600 rpm; 305 ft lb @ 4,800 rpm.

The next step up is the 5.3 liter which = 320 HP SAE @ 5,300 rpm; 340 ft lb @ 4,200 rpm.

From the factory a 2wd standard or extended cab will be a pretty quick little dude.

Since there's no real engineering hurdle to overcome in order to jerk the 5.3 and replace it with any other LSx SBC, how long before we see a 505 horse GMC Canyon?

Am I the only one that thinks a $20,000, ~300 horse, 2wd pickup is worth looking at?

thats awesome. already wired for an lsx motor. Might be fun to pick up a used one a few years out and make a sleeper out of.

    That's what I'm thinking.

A junkyard LQ9 is less than $2k, and I imagine in 3 or 4 years they'll be cheaper still.

One of the car mags (Car Craft?) got damn as near 400 horse out of that motor with a cam swap, so in 2012 you should be able to put together a 500 horse small block canyon for less than $8k, figuring $6k-ish for the truck and another $2k for cam/intake/reflash/mods.

i just bought a band new lq9 with forged pistons and connection rods and a stock crank for 2800. Built for a 300 shot. All of that in that little truck with some spray = :bigthumb:

The ls1 cam only car I have now already makes just a hair over 400 to the wheels on a loaded roller dyno. Guys with ls3/l92 are already in the 480+ range with bolt ons and a cam.

thats why i bought my dakota, 4.7 V8 240hp, 300ftlb torq, 5 speed, 3.55 rear gear. it moves for alil truck, ive got a flow on it, and i have a K&N FIPK in staging for it. next step is a drop and were in mustang terriory for $13k with 17k miles . although it would be nice to have 320hp, i think the differance between my trucks $12,500 price tag vs the v8 canyons probibly $20K price, i could make up the differeance in HP with bolt on's :dunno:

i went to my local chevy dealer and GMC dealer and they both said the colorado/canyon doenst come with a V8 nor will it ever, so i said "oh ok thanks ill just keep my V8 dakota then" :mamoru: fuckn stupid car salesmen, im really curious to drive one of these, becasue i came this close || to getting a 5 banger, 5 speed, single cab, colorado becasue it has alot more leg room. but in the end the dakota won me over more, could have something to do with the fact that this is my third dakota. :o

either way its just a "hold me over" car untill my UTE gets here :x:

I had a 97 dakota with 318(5.2L) but it was an auto, it moved pretty good for what it was. I took it to the track once, I know the MPH was 88 but I can't remember the ET.

they're not very fast through the quarter :o, the way they're geared they tear through the 60 foot and then fall short around 3rd(5 speed that is). but on the street they haul ass stop light to stop light, and thats where they spend 90% of they're driving , so :dunno:

the gears in the 5 speed on the V8's are First 4.01 Second 2.33 thrid 1.88 forth 1.00 fifth 0.80, and the v8s typically have a 3.55 rear gear, thus giving you a 7.56 overall first.

just for comparison reasons, lets take a Prostreet Nova, lets say it has a 3 speed auto turbo 350 chevy which typically has somehwere in the neighorhood of a 2.70 first, put 4.11 in the rear the over all would be 6.81. for what it lacks in HP it makes it up in its stock 300 ft lb torq and gears.

so with that said (if you can hook the tires) in first these dakotas FLY!.. off the line. on my 97 i only had exhaust and i pulled with a LS1 camaro 6 speed off the line, he started to get me in 2nd and when i hit 3rd in was all over :(, but it was still fun to try :hs:. id love to swap a T56 in it some day :o

So it sounds like a sub $30k V8 Canyon might sell.

I would be surprised if the engine is avail but in the crew, and maybe ext cabs. I don't think the reg cab would get it... And probably only in the higher trims. we'll see.
