If you had to make a choice between these two configurations, which would you go for?

I am doing two weddings this summer and they are paying for either one of these and a couple flashes....

I have alot of other lenses, i need a lower range though, so its 17-70, or 10-22. I have a 28-75, 50, 70-200, and I will have an 350D as a secondary body.

40 is not worth the extra coin. Pick up the 30 and spend the money on good glass.

I disagree.. used a 30D a lot and would never go back after having my 40D for a few months now.. It's just nicer in so many small ways that make it worth it.. I especially enjoy the larger sized body / LCD screen.. Digic III, faster fps, more sensetive center focus, better crosstype auto focus, extra resolution.. love the custom functions menus, highlight tone priority rocks... so much stuff..

So you think its smart to spend almost double the money of the 30D($799) 40D($1299) to get an extra 1.5FPS. 8.2mp to 10.1 (means next to nothing) and live view which is essentially a joke. Yes AF is improved with DigicIII but not worth almost double the price when money can be better spent on Glass that retains value(good glass).

whats more important body or glass?

And more ergonomic/larger body, which is a huge difference.

    And the sensor cleaning function.

And the Center point being TWICE as sensetive at f/2.8 and faster.

    And highlight tone priority.

    And additional sRAW shooting modes.

And more info displayed in the view finder.

And Digic II vs Digic III

    And cross-type focus points

And the AF-ON button which is actually pretty useful

And EOS-1D Menu system (which is way more intuitive)

    And additional weather proofing

But yah, you are totally right, it's the same thing as the 30D except it has a 3in LCD and 2more MP.... :ugh2:

    Size differenmce is negligble
    Sensor cleaning is marketing gimmick
Cross-type points for F5.6 or faster lens & Center point additionally sensitive with lenses of F2.8 or faster is nice for sure along with Digic III

most other cosmetic and menu changes are minor. It's an improvement but not one that would warrant double the price tage of a 30D which is as capable of doing the same Job and investing in better glass which makes all the difference in IQ.

I understand you're loving your 40D but the question was for nicklk in regards to which route to take and what would benefit him in the long run.

Right and his situation is that apparently they are buying the equipment for him.. So I would say screw it and get both of both worlds.. 40D + good glass.. throw in a couple of your own bucks to make up the difference for a nicer lens on the nicer body.
