Those could work with more color in the sky. Try going to a spot that has an interesting subject in the foreground and try bracketing your shots.

Try to incorporate an interesting subject into your shots. These are just pictures of the sky.

    Horrible advice.

Those pictures are just snapshots and are devoid of anything approaching an interesting subject. Don't spend time trying to save them with a ton of Photoshop filters and actions, spend your time trying to take an interesting picture. THEN play with photoshop.

I know you were trying to capture a sunset, but you missed it by a good 15 minutes at least. And that wasn't even a particularly interesting sunset. For a sunset picture to be interesting, it needs to be like the hand of god reaching down and stroking your camera lens. It needs to be the best sunset ever seen by man or captured on film and it should make women and babies cry. Why? Because EVERYONE, their uncles and their dogs shoot sunsets and if it isn't the best sunset ever seen it's just another yawntastic snapshot.

Find a subject you can relate to, or a subject you can interact with. Something that will provide a clear focal point to your pictures, and post that for critique. Then we can give you good advice on what to do or not do. All we can really say with these three photos is "yeah, those are pictures."

I see what you were trying to shoot, but they just came out as snapshots

    I'll keep trying

I'd imagine you actually have a ton of really awesome photo opportunities in Iraq, you probably just don't realize it. Ugly can be good if you show it for what it is. The thing about ugly is you have to be up close and personal with it otherwise it's just boring.

You could have a lot of fun if you set little assignments for yourself to try an capture what is good or bad about your time in Iraq. For example, if it's boring, spend a week trying to get an image that captures the boredom like a candid of a solder catching a nap in a humvee, or someone playing solitaire or whatever.Or, if the subject is hot, you try to get heat waves radiating off equipment, or whatever. Get candids of your buddies laughing to show the good moments. Whatever. (This is all pretty cliche, but you get the idea)

The point is, try to pick some definite subjects and then play with it from there. You might flip through this Flickr gallery for some inspiration too: http://www.flickr.com/photos/soldiersmediacenter/

that makes a lot of sense, ive been in a shitty mood around here lately so i guess thats why i say there's nothing good to photograph, but there is a good landscape i can go drive to, ill probably try that, crappy thing about trying to get 'candid' shots is security :o. i'll take some time and see what i can come up with. thanks
