    I build a custom firmware, put it into DFU mode, and then itunes either 1) does recognize it, or 2) when it does recognize it and "prepare iphone for restore," via the custom fireware, it always times out and nothing happens, then I have to restore my normal shit. wtf?

    Are you using RedSn0w or PwnageTool? I couldn't get RedSnow to work, I had to use PwnageTool.

    I do know that if some people are running through a USB hub then it could cause problems.

    I found a reboot of my computer helped, as using the software to help enter DFU mode worked, otherwise I'd get the 1600 error.

    that's what I thought.

    just to avoid confusion, I prefer calling the original iPhone : 1G as in first generation, Original iPhone, or just iPhone.

    ultrasn0w is out now. Waiting for a coworker to try it first so I don't fuck myself over :)

    Edit: Success. Rogers 3G phone on the Tele2/Comviq network. :)

    Unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

    2G = Edge Networks
    3G = 3G Networks
    3GS = 3.5G Networks

    why not.
    iPhone = first generation
    iPhone 3G = second generation
    iPhone 3GS = third generation

    iPhone 3G also works on Edge.
    iPhone 3GS works on Edge and "3G", yet you don't call them 2G.

    Glad to hear you're up and running thanks to Ultrasnow.
