How does 2x2GB setup work with WinXP 32bit? From what I read windows will only recognize up to 3 or 3.5gb?

32-bit xp supports between 3-3.5GB depending on mobo.

It's a new Abit board for a e6600. So even though I only have 2 sticks 2x2, i'll be able to use "most" of the 2nd stick?

Not worth it, imo. 2x1gb + 2x512mb would give you 3GB and will likely perform better.

Since I never considered doing it before, I'll ask:

Having the two different sizes of RAM cards (2x1GB + 2x512MB) won't interfere with dual-channel operation?

correct; you match each channel, but each channel can function independently

Is there any further benefit to having four identical RAM cards?

Not to my knowledge, they won't interact with each other (the two sets of two). As long as they have the same timings that's as good as it gets as far as I know.

2x2 has already been ordered, it's not a choice I made. I'm just wondering what I can expect when I install windows.

You'll see most, but not all of your RAM. If it was me I wouldn't be worried. If you absolutely MUST see all 4GB then install XP 64-bit of Vista 64-bit, but I wouldn't recommend it.

It's not my machine, putting one together for a friend. He absolutely insisted on 4gb of memory so later he could use it with Vista :dunno:
