how long it takes to open up a program has LITTLE/NOTHING to do with ram.

Word isn't Universal Binary so, until Mac Office 2007 is released, Word will run on Rosetta (slow).

Open up a few iLife programs and see how those run.

use NeoOffice, it's universal. I deleted Office2004 2 weeks ago and have not had any issues with documents people send to me. The other option is iWork. I hate M$0ffice, it just feels like a shitty windoze program poluting my sexy Mac.

Yeah, I know you are not really asking...

neo office can work as excel too, in fact, it completely replaces ms office. with no problems. i only use neo office for spreadsheets because pages and keynote own me. an iwork spreadsheet program would be  though
