I shot a new years eve party last night with my 285hv. It worked great - until I changed batteries. I was using 1.2V 2000 mah Duracells from wally world - those worked - I was firing at 1/16 and 1/32 power. Then I put in some fresh regular AA's to use to fire at 1/2 power - I got quite a few shots from it that way. Then I went to put in more regular AA's and the flash wouldn't fire. Then I tried some Energizer 1.2V 2700 mah batteries - no go. I started thinking my flash was broken. Then I put the first set of rechargeable and the flash worked. :wtf:

I don't know what happened. Has anyone else experienced this?

That is odd and deserving of a :wtf:

Maybe its a capacitance thing and it needs to fully discharge or something, but that is only a guess.

My battery holder is really picky. Sometimes it will appear dead, but if I give a good thwack on the side it comes back to life.

Was it completely dead, or did it have some signs of life? Were the indicator lights on? Did it sound like it was charging?

Sounded like it was charging the capacitor, but not as loud as usual. You could hear it whining. The LEDs on the back never lit up though.

    austin,

    What brand batteries?

On my unidirectional flash, I can ONLY use brand named batteries.. Like energizer, duracell, eneloops and the higher end stuff

The cheaper ones, like Ray O Vacs tend to not even charge it every time.. or it takes it twice as long to charge.

And the 285 is a much powerful flash compared to this achiever 115a/s

The regular batteries were Rayovacs - the first set worked. 2nd set did not. :o :dunno:

Pretty sure they were. They are on the charger currently so I can test it out. The 2nd set of regular batteries not working will still baffle me if the 2nd set of rechargeables work.
