Hi I just bought a new (to me) car. It's a 1990 240SX SE. It has 115k miles on it and I have a problem with it. It is an automatic transmission car and everytime it shifts from first to second it lags and jolts forward before shifting into second. Could you guys help me identify what is wrong with my car? I have already checked the transmission fluid and it looks good.

Not sure why you thought this was detailing related but it is likely the kickdown cable is not adjusted right. Chiltons or Haynes is your friend.

Question: a buddy of mine at work has a 93 240SX, and he did the 5-speed swap, but now he has a constant CEL because of that. Is there a way to stop that without changine the whole ECU out?

remove the bulb in the dash, Also heard to remove all auto transmissions signals to the ECU (IE pins from wire harness that feed the unwanted signals)

Cool, thanks, I'll pass that stuff along to him, I'm sure he's tired of looking at the light.

one more thing, befor oyu go all into checking the ECU, look for this clip to see if it is plugged in:

    http://www.240sx.org/faq/articles/shifting_faster_with_an_auto.htm

that is what i just did to mine until my new engine comes in. if that is un clipped it will always throw a check engine light code. even after you clear it. but it is perfectly safe and well worth it. don't know if yours does this, but i can check codes on my od on/off light (on my 98 it gave a 16 flash code on the OD on/off light whenever you switch the key to the on position) and when i did the ECU diognostic, it gave me a 12 and a 5 for a 125 error code witch is Line Pressure S/V according to the diagram of codes. just to let you know if it only throws one of those 2 codes not to be worried.

my bet is on the clip undone that gets rid of those damn granny shifts that it is programmed to do. and my suggestion would be to leave it undone unless he is a senior citizen. it makes driveing it alot funner.

most likely. back when I had an auto tranny with the KA, the tranny would experience some very harsh shifting. then a few months later the tranny just died. I think the torque converter simply blew out.
