i just got my lens yesterday. so far so good, everything looks good, but i have a question about the lens.

right where the rear lens cap screws on, i can feel a thin piece of rubber all the way around the edge of the lens, where it mounts to the camera. is this for weather sealing?

my 70-200 didn't have that, not that i remember, i sold it, and i don't see it on my 100-400.

    thanks.

your 70-200 should have had it also. your 100-400 wont cause it is a dust trap anyway, a seal would not help

i sold the 70-200 and from what i recall, i didn't remember it. i am not saying it didn't have it, i just don't remember it.

yeah, the 100-400 is the dust canon, however, i haven't noticed any dust as long as i have been using the lens and i bought it used, so who knows...?

Mine has it too. I always just assumed it was for weather sealing.

Congrats on the new lens, you're going to love it. Mine's on my camera 99% of the time.

70-200/4 doesn't have it, but I think the 70-200/2.8 does

I don't see or feel any kind of rubber on or around the mount on my 70-200 f/4

the 2.8 IS and the 4 IS are sealed, the non-is version of both is not.

    Yep.
The rubber is for weather sealing with 1D bodies.
