I have the 20D and a the 24 -70 L, does the supplied lens hood serve any purpose for a 1.6 crop camera? Are there any lens hoods that would better serve such a set up?

My dad's got the same set up, and, yes, the lens hood does work fine for the sensor (the hood blocks the same amount of light as film, just the sensor is a smaller version of the 'film').

That said, I've never really had a problem with flare with that combo, so never use the darn thing.

hoods can help more than flare....they can help contrast and of course, protect the front element in the event of an impact

Of course the hood helps. Stray light could come in at the very edge of the lens and throw the contrast off a bit. Maybe the 24-70 isn't as prone to flare as other lenses, but it happens. Is it the most IDEAL lens for 1.6x? A longer rectangular hood would probably be the best choice, but you have to make some compromises. :mamoru:
