will an upper designed for a 243 be sufficient or will I need to replace other components to make it work?

No you can swap the upper and shoot many things, .22LR, 9mm, etc

You can shoot anything you can reasonably fit in a AR-15 sized mag. There is even 6 x 45 (aka 6mm -223) which is basicly a 223 necked up to a 243. You'll have to handload as there are no comerical offerings.

More popular selections are 6.5 grendal and 6.8 remington.

They make a single shot bolt action upper that fits on a AR lower :)

I'm just looking for a 223/5.56 with a little more options other than another 223 upper with different hardware. for those with sarcastic remarks, just keep in mind that I'm an AR newbie as I've only owned standard bolt and lever action rifles (and an FNAR), so I'm just looking for advice from those who have more knowledge than I before i plunge into something that i will be unhappy with. I've never owned a gun with more than one option besides ammo selection.

My understanding as a relative AR noob is that the best way to go between rifle calibers on AR rifles is to have a dedicated upper for each one you want to shoot.

If you are wanting an AR-patterned gun for .243 (which is not a bad idea at all), then you need to be looking at an AR-10 based weapon. The .243 cartridge is essentially the same size as a .308.

You still have several options in the AR-15 sized rifle: 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 Rem SPC and the new 6mmAR loadings. I think most shooters that are wanting 'more' out of their AR for hunting/long-distance/etc.. are going for the 6.5 Grendel.

Just for shits and grins ... ballistics comparison of 6.5 Grendel 123gr Scenar Lapua vs .243 Federal 100gr Sierra GK (I used commonly available factory loadings since you didn't mention if you were going to be handloading. If you are going to handload, you could probably get the 6.5 to match any factory .243 cartridge)

Pretty similar ballistics and since we're talking about a round that you can shoot out of an off-the-shelf AR with a different upper swapped out, it's a pretty decent compromise.

You're going to have to start on the AR-10 level of lowers, then build or buy your own to go to .243 win. If you're just looking for long distance shooting, .223 should still give you plenty range and accuracy out of a good upper.

DPMS makes a complete .243based AR. The LR-243 I believe.

How viable is the 6.5 round for hunting deer? :dunno:

Ok, since my original question seems too have been stupid. Is there any uppers that can be attached to a standard 223 lower that will allow me to shoot larger caliber ammo?

I'm located in a state that doesn't allow deer hunting with anything less than 24 cal ammo. do I have any options other than going with an AR-10 or another dedicated rifle?

I'd like an upper for 223 and another for other purposes without having to have 2 separate guns.

Yep. There's lots of options out there. 6.5 Grendel would probably be my choice.

Another option I forgot about might be .243 WSSM.

They do make bolt action uppers that shoot 50 bmg that fit on a ar-15 lower.
