I've been wanting to pick up a 22 rifle for awhile now. Yesterday went to a local FWA range with some friends and now I really want one. It's too much cheap fun not to, right?

The one I really liked was a Remington 581S, but it's been discontinued and I haven't really seen any used ones around. Another guy had a 597, which was nice, but it jammed every 5th shot or so. Maybe just the ammo, but I would rather not have a gun that did that.

What is out their that would be similar to the 581S and what should I expect to pay for something like that?

10/22s feel small to me. These two Remingtons felt more like a full size rifle, which is a little more comfortable for me to hold.

Also, I'm kind of partial to the bolt action, but it's not a requirement.

savage makes a decent out of the box bolt action, as does marlin. If you dont wanna spend a lot of money for a decent gun, Id go that route.

  8. I missed the bolt action thing. In addition to the savage, look at the cz 452 American or the ruger 77/22.

Yeah... all the good bolt guns have been listed.

Stay the fuck away from the 597.

I've had two. Both were impossible to get running right. One fired OOB and tried to kill me (it wasn't a 17HMR).

Tried them all, up to (I think) the third. Also tried all the RFC tricks, up to and including dipping the guide rods in fresh-killed chicken blood hoping to attain the proper tension (or lack thereof). Just CONSTANT FTF/FTE's; it was crazy.

If it worked, it would have been cool. I actually dug the factory stock ergos, and the rifle shot pretty well.

That sucks. I was a bit :noes: after getting my 597 VTR. But  after my first 2 times out (250ish round each) and not having any issues.

Edit: I did notice the mags were pretty tight the first 40 or so rounds.

I really thought I wanted a bolt action until I actually shot one side by side a 10/22. Ended up getting over what I thought I wanted, and getting the 10/22. You can get an oversized stock to better fit your build or arm length.

But, if you are positive you want the bolt action, plenty of good ones listed so far. :)

CZ 452s are getting discontinued at the end of the year. I love my 452 Lux and want an American model.

  25. Word is they're being replaced by a new model.
