Welcome to the world of CA’s unbelievably convoluted and mostly nazi firearm laws. Basically as I understand it if you are over 16 you can possess a handgun to engage in lawful shooting (range, hunting, ranching, etc.) so long as you have the written consent of your parents. Check in this to be sure: http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/forms/pdf/Cfl2006.pdf You should probably also call the range and ask them if they will let you shoot on your own.

The range where i am has a release form your parents have to sign. Then you can shoot the pistols all you want. (over 18 of course, otherwise a parent has to be wit you).

But honostly, they dont even ask us anymore, and we bring pistols all the time.

    Ask the range specifically.

At the range I go to, you must have a written parent consent if you are under 21 and over 18.

You might want to check out if you can legally transport or be in possession of his firearm without him there.
