    Nismo is here

Too bad the body kit looks like it's a little too much, but at least all of it is functional. Doesn't sound like they did anything to increase horsepower :hs:.

To be officially unveiled stateside at the New York International Auto Show, the 2007 Nissan NISMO 350Z--complete with dramatic NISMO aero package and other performance goodies--will start arriving in US showrooms in July. Nissan Sport expects a base price in the low $40K range.

The NISMO aerodynamics package--which includes an aggressive front fascia with chin spoiler, side skirts, a larger rear fascia with functional air diffuser and rear wing--isn’t just show. It was developed based on Nissan’s SUPER GT race cars. Nissan’s designers and testers used a supercomputer to run airflow design simulations to maximize handling, stability and downforce.

The NISMO 350Z also features the use of special mass dampers. Manufactured by Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and developed exclusively for the NISMO version, the dampers connect the right and left side-frame members at the front and rear of the car, and serve to absorb body twisting and vibration.

Nissan engineers also went to work on improving the Z’s body stiffness, increasing the welded area of the body panels and adding additional reinforcement bars and panels. Additional performance enhancements include a specially tuned independent multi-link suspension, Brembo brakes, NISMO-branded tuned exhaust, and NISMO-branded gunmetal gray RAYS super lightweight 5-spoke forged-alloy wheels (18x9-inch front, 19x10-inch rear) with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires.

Interior treatments are of the bling variety, and include specially designed black cloth seats with red inserts, red stitching throughout the interior (steering wheel, shift knob, etc.), and special NISMO white and gray gauge faces. Of course the car would not be complete with a serialized NISMO-etched aluminum plaque mounted on the center console.

Look for road and track testing in a future issue of Nissan Sport. We can’t wait to get behind the wheel and see how this Z compares to its brothers.

    Second Takes

The NISMO 350Z is an interesting attempt at capturing market share for those customers interested in a unique Z fresh from the factory. The NISMO bodywork--extended nose, bi-plane wing and ground effects rear-- is clearly an attempt to capitalize on Nissan's Super Autobacs GT500 race effort. But for North America, it's a bit over the top for a street car. Hopefully, the performance bits for improving handling and the slight bump in engine performance will help justify the premium.
--David Muramoto, Senior Editor ([email protected])

At first glance, the NISMO 350Z has all the smackings of an overdone body kit--the kind that gets more snickers than kudos. But (and it's a mighty big but), the aero mods on the NISMO 350Z are completely functional. This is a car that is meant to be tracked. We like the beefier suspension, the specially engineered cladding for optimum downforce, and even the interior show. Sure you might want to close your eyes when you approach her from the rear, but once in the driver's seat, we bet those Ugly Betty visions will quickly evaporate.

lol at "Mass Dampers". I knew Renault and Nissan were in bed together, I just didn't think Ghosn had the balls to ask Flavio for the old mass dampers from the r26.

I liked the NISMO ver. 2 kit better. The Fairlady RS Concept was hot.

I agree, wtf is up with the rear end of the car. Did someone get bored in their design shop and just throw something on there to leave the office early one day?
