My gf wants a new car, she now has a short 5 mile commute to work, and wants something more fun and better in the winter then her 2001 lexus is300... so we went to the BMW dealership to look @ 328Xi's but she saw the mini cooper S and liked that, the price is alot cheaper obvoiusly, and it has much more of a fun factor then the 328..

So what are OT's thoughts? its 177 HP turbocharged adn weigs in @ 2500lbs... i would have her get sport suspension and the LSD, everything else is up to her....

does anybody know any good mini cooper forums? i wanna see what people are doing with boost controllers on these things? 200 WHP would be fine

Test drove one for my mom (she wants an auto one but they only had a stick onhand).

So far very nice. Tons faster than her regular Cooper right now and the handling is amazing. The interior is kinda weird but nice. I loved the seats.

Right now she's going to be paying a big premium since its a brand new model and they have to order it. I hear the wait is going to be 2-3 months.

My GF loves it everytime she sees one. Only new car she really likes, she's more of a fan of old school cars like old Alfas and Karmann Ghias.

she is starting to loathe the autotrans and the fact that it only gets 20mpg, she is payign 300 a month on the lexus, but is aout 4 k below trade in value with ehr payoff, so she could end up with the minicooper for less then her current payment

she wants a lease because she turns over her cars every 3 years anyways

and she wants to autoX this year with me

really? the local BMW dealership has a shit ton in stock here, she only cares about manual+sport suspension+LSD... and anything but black color with HID's which is pretty much standard

    classic mini > bmw mini

they're a lot more safe than most people think. i know quite a few owners via the local auto-x clubs. one guy i heard of got sideswiped by a big suv, made him nail a big wall at about 40-60mph. the suv was obviously out of control, so it hit the same wall a ways away from the mini driver. the guy in the mini was totally unharmed, and kicked his door out (it was stuck), and started running towards the suv, ready to throw hands... till he saw the the suv driver/passengers were hurt pretty bad.

personally, i hate em, but they're good cars.

so, i test drove it last night

showed up @ the bmw/mini dealership in my M and parked it and immediatly some guy with a BMW shirt comes over and tries to steer me to a 328xi for my gf, i tell him im here for the mini and he gives me a wierd look...

so we go inside the mini dealership and look around at all teh weird stuff in there, and i talk to a sales guy and he gives us the keys to a mini S, and then hands me a map of some good roads around... my gf and i get in with her driving and she takes it out for a leasurly drive... she gets on i a couple times and is happy with its pep (def faster then her auto is300)

so we switch places and i go to a stoplight and ref the thing and launch it... take off and OOPS DSC is still on, crap... so then turn it off and endgage sport mode...

with sport mode on the throttle mapping gets more aggresive and the power steering tightens up

i beat the crap outta this little thing, the whole time with a big smile on my face... its a god damn go kart... i couldnt get the thing to flex at all... the car would not body roll much (had sport susp) the brakes were great (one stop, didnt test for fade) and the thing actualy chirped going into 3rd... all in all it was a pretty fun car, the center speedo didnt bother me because in the tach they now have a digital speedo. so it was cool...

i could see myself driving one... when i poppd the hood the dealer was telling me that a JCW mini was coming out next year using twin turbo's (i guess like the mazdaspeed 6) although i cant see that happening from a 1.6l... but i just was like ok dude....

there is no intercooler that i could see (maybe an intergrated water-air in teh intake plenum around the back of the motor) but with a 3" turboback and some methanol injection this car could have some serious nuts

i actally enjoyed driving it as much as my m, just because it was fun
