Does anyone know how to get the diagnostic codes through the engine light? I know how to do it on a dodge, just not a VW...

You can't. You need to use a scan tool.

Basic codes from a Scan Tool at your local Vato Zone. Otherwise, hit up VWVortex.com and find someone local that has a VagCom.

I have a VAG-COM. Where do you live? You should consider buying a subscription so you can include critical info like that in your avatar.

I think he meant where to plug in the scanner.

On a dodge, if you hold the TRIP and RESET buttons in the cluster down when you turn on the ignition, it will show you the fault codes in the odometer.

The OBD plug is in the driver's footwell, right below where your left knee would be. It's way at the front of the footwell, and is purple.

Be aware that a generic scan tool can read some, but not all the fault codes in the ECU. Here is a listing of some of the codes: http://www.bentleypublishers.com/tech/vw/vw.dtc.table.htm

I highly recommend VAG-COM. Mine has been very very very helpful when working on my car.
