Went to teh big valley dodge and subaru dealership today. Jumped in the 2002 with the guy and we went down the street to this parking structre where they keep all the new subs. I jumped in the 2004 and he took the 2002 and told me to follow him around and see how i like it. We were both driving manuals. He pulled away from me everytime from a dead stop. WTF.... the 04 only had 30 miles on it where the 02 had about 20,000. Could it possibly be that the 2002 was broken in more. It just blew me away just how much quicker the 2002 was. I know the 04 weighs like 70 more lbs than the 02. but WTF??

A lot can have to do with user skill, a broken in engine and tranny and the possibility that the 02 wasnt stock.

The hp rating is the exact same along with everything else. Maybe he is a better driver or like qbushido said, the other might be modded.

The ecu in the 04 simply hasn't had time to "learn" a fast driving style. Get a broken in 04 and try again. :)

No... the 02 wasnt moded cuz it was stright from the lot. But um... yeah im sure it had to do with the engine being more broken in in the 02. Heres a good site when i do buy my 04 wrx im gonna go through these guy to mod it a little. Nothing too crazy like their track car. Just bigger intercooler, down pipe, cold air, and blow off valve. Then possibly re-program. Check it out..cool site...www.esxmotorsports.com

The 02 WRX consistenly dyno's 10-15HP more at the wheels than the 03+ models. It is believed that Subaru pulled back the horsepower a bit because of concerns over the tranny (same reason that they switched clutches half way into 2002). My 02 dyno'd a stock 167whp -- an average 03+ model dynos a stock 153-155whp.

They dyno'd a 2003 WRX at Vishnu at 178.8 hp at the wheels...stock.

It seems like every WRX is a little different.
