Guns Traded In For Gift Cards, No Questions Asked

COMPTON, Calif. Plastic or steel? Up to $200 worth of gift cards were up for grabs, for those willing to trade in a firearm at Compton's annual "Gifts for Guns" program.

Authorities gave $100 gift cards to those turning in firearms and $200 for assault weapons.

The gift cards were redeemable at Best Buy, Target, Home Depot and Ralphs supermarkets.

Saturday's event was at a Ralphs supermarket, 280 E. Compton Blvd., where the weapons were collected by sheriff's personnel and volunteers at a booth set up in the parking lot.

People turning in guns were not required to identify themselves or say where the weapons came from.

Another Gifts for Guns event will be held Sunday and next weekend.

I honestly wonder, in an area like Compton, I wonder if gun thefts go up days before these events

You'd have to be an idiot to turn in an "assault" weapon for $200. Even the crappiest shot-out WASR's are selling for $400+ on gunbroker right now .

The trick is... the way the economy is going, those gift cards will be worthless soon.

i bet when it comes to the definition of assault rifle in the case of $100 GC vs $200, they'll be a bit more strict.
