Weak front suspensions (Balljoints, drag links, tie rod ends, radius arm bushings) Unless it has the control arms, then scratch drag links and radius arm bushings off that hate list.
Ford it seems, cannot make a coil spring worth a pinch of coonshit, so expect to replace the front springs.
The 4.0 sohc engines are showing a lot of reliability issues, and noise louder than the powersmoke Diesels.
Depending on your climate, they rust out prematurely around the fuel filler door, and under the mirrors, and on the leading edge of the hood.
Typical ford---can't get any life out of the front tires due to the fucked up suspension geometry---Twin I-Beam (if not control arms) suspension is as stable as a piece of rebar stretched between the front wheels.
Oh, and a lot of the transmissions had slippage/shiftage problems.

Ya I was looking at getting an Explorer or a Jeep for a bit... I then test drove one and realized that I would roll the damn thing over. Other then that they are nice cars... My friend had transmission problems with his 96 though :dunno:

lets see what we've repaired/replaced on our explorer:
    -torsion bars twice
    -balljoints
    -tranny. 1st-gear lockup
    -misc engine seals
    -rear axle

I originally recommended a Cherokee btw

My father in law has a '98 Mountaineer with the 4L. Little to no regular maintenance. He finally blew up the engine at ~160k IIRC. Trans is fine, as is the transfer case. Suspension is fine.

Seems pretty fucking reliable to me :dunno:

I'd trust driving a bagged and dro'd Explorer before any stock setup. At least I know if anything breaks it'd be my own fault.

Grand Cherokees are the worst-reliable vehicles ever rated by Consumer Reports. The only other vehicle that comes close is the Mercedes ML-series.

If you want a decent American SUV, then get a Tahoe or something.
