My friend is looking too pick one up, its either a 528i, 02+ explorer, or LS1 fbody (Camaro Z28 or WS6)

How reliable are the 528s? This one is a 97 has about 115k miles on it, for $8k.

What are common things to go wrong with them, and how well to they run with higher mileage?

the bmw's run pretty well at higher mileage...BUT at that mileage i'm sure its had the cooling system replaced.

also, make sure to check out the transmission

the cooling system and trans are the 2 big weak points

97's aren't as reliable as the newer e39's but still pretty damn good cars!

    if he buys the car

and the cooling system hasn't been replaced go thru and do that first

then change out all the fluids!

Had a 97 up til 180k miles. Then some ass t-boned me by running a stop sign. Cars are bullet proof. Just check the radiator/water pump

Not nearly as much as the automatics.

I say go for it just make sure the cooling system has been replaced. It's not a bad DIY either.
