    mechanic is going to charge me 950 to fix it. is it worth it?

    New engine will cost more. Junkyard engine may cost less, but who knows if you want to chance that.

    more than 900. i don't need it to run forever just for a few more months until I can afford a new car

    4 cyl or 6 cyl?

    If it's a 4cyl do it yourself but a 6cyl is another story. Those heads are very tempermental so unless he has a good bit of experience with the 3.0 I wouldn't trust him.

    I'd swap in a 3.4 though because the 3.Slow is called that for a reason. It sucks. Also, the 3.4 will easily get the 250+k if the oil is changed semi regularly and 300K is not out of the question.
