i know a lot of you have them. i might be getting one. inform me.
most overengineered BMWs on the planet...with regular maintenance it can last forever.
Change the timing belt on the 6 cylinders regularly, keep the fluids flushed and clean (coolant, trans, diff, brakes every two years, oil every 3-5k) and you should be golden.
Keep an eye on the rear wheel bearings if you run the car hard.
i'm just gonna be driving it to campus every day and back to daytona beach (about 60mi highway) every so often. not planning on beating the ever loving piss out of it.
whats the average price of the timing belt? seeing as i've never been under the hood of one, is it an outside belt running on a cam gear like the older volvos?
i'm guessing it is since you guys are saying timing belt, and not timing chain
I already made this thread.
I second the timing belt, make sure whoever does it knows EXACTLY what they are doing. I blew the head gasket on mine and the guys that pulled the head fucked everything up (supposed to be a BMW shop). Make sure you get one with maintenance records and you'll be fine.
If you get a 318, it is necessary to change the timing chain every 100k. I just replaced 2 engines in 318's with 140k on them because the owners didn't change the chain and all of the associated parts. The plastic chain guides broke and fell into the oil pan, eventually getting sucked into the oil pickup and causing a low oil pressure condition, spinning a rod bearing.
Yeah, chains are not zero-maintenance.
sweet the timing chain was done 6k ago... i think this thing is going to be baller as fuck. let's hope the sale works out
best of luck!!!
i wish i had an nice e30, but i have a decent e24 (635csi)
Everyone says that before the actually get a BMW.
The cars just beg to be driven hard.
if i need to flog the piss out of something, that's what i have the Formula for
My grandmother used to own one of those. She had to drive it hard to keep the battery charged.
Then she wrecked it, and now she drives a Civic.
I have 240K on my 89 325i. I've only put about 12,000 miles on it in the past few years, though, because I didn't drive it at college.
It's doing good.
^^^^ nice car... the ronal's look perfect
i have 260k on my e30...
said E30 is coming up here on sunday, getting picked up on tuesday, and examined on wednesday... hopefully it'll be mine on thursday
it's red, needs tint, and a stereo
Nice! Have fun with it!
some nice looking e30 you guys have. i have had a few and they were the most fun cars i have ever owned. buy it, keep it clean, drive it hard, maintain it, and sell it in a few years for more than you bought it for.
yes they do run forever
it's getting inspected right now, hopefully it'll be mine today
too much little shit wrong with it
needs ball joints, CV boots are trashed, small crack in the front of the radiator, i knew the A/C compressor was bad (pistons seals are shot so it won't hold a charge), but it's also missing the belt tensioner and the mounting bracket FOR the belt tensioner.
as well as the gauge cluster having intermittent problems. so. no E30 for me
i guess it was a hookup from a friend of yours and the low price was the only reason you considered it?
pretty much. interior is in GREAT shape, just needs a stereo. i thought hte only major hurdle was the A/C not running. engine runs really strong too. oh well.
