Which one would you pick, ignoring the caliber?

Hi-power. If you ignore the caliber the 1911 doesn't have any advantages.

Except for a trigger reset. While I love my HP, the lack of trigger reset really keeps me from becoming proficient with it. Now my 1911, I love that trigger ~3.5 lbs of smooth goodness. If I could get a 1911-like trigger reset on my HP then I'd agree with you 100%

who are you and why are you asking all the question I am thinking?

I'm trying to get one of my grandfather's hand guns either a browning high power 9mm or a colt 45 1911

Well the trigger break and travel is nice, but it's the reset that's hard for me to get over. Although the trigger on my FN is a little strong at 7 lbs.

I love Hi powers, I plan to find a good one,

as far as 1911's go, they are great but other than my kimber, id take a good Hi-power over a 1911. (shot placement > power)
and I shoot better with 9mm.

Hi-Power, mainly because I like the way it feels in my hand better.

    Hi-Power advantages:
    Easier to take apart.
    Higher capacity.
    1911 Advantages
    Better trigger
Prefer grip safety over magazine safety.

I have both, but prefer shooting the 1911.
