Is there any manufacturer of 1911's that I should stay away from? They are all pretty good from what I gather through reading. I will be looking in the "commander" sized area with the 4.25"-ish barrel.

Smith & Wesson PD being at the top of the list, sig being below that (mainly because I have 2 other sigs). Going to try and keep this less than $1000. :hs:

Look for Dan Wesson, Used Ed brown if your lucky, Fuzion, STI (Some QC issues), Colt, Higher up kimbers. stay away from micros, nothing smaller than commander.

i'm just repeating my gathered internet knowledge.

I'll second the para. Also, some guys have a thing about staying away from Taurus.
I've heard good and bad stories about Taurus 1911s, but the stories about their CS are pretty much universally horrific, and that alone would keep me wary.
I've also heard to keep away from the Auto Ordnance models.

    I have a Taurus pt 1911.

The factory mags suck, both of mine have feed lip spreading issues. I called CS about it, they never got back to me.

    The bluing is crap.

The ambi safety is shit. Should replace that with a standard one.

Nothing was deburred on it at all. When I first detail stripped it I cut the shit out of my thumb.

Other than that it runs great. I've never had a single problem with it at the range.

The LDA models? or SA? or everything from them?

I've never cared for the LDA trigger, but I thought they had pretty good fit/finish on their guns so I'd still consider an SA model.

I've heard good things about the GI Expert as an entry level gun... bang for the buck and all that.

for the price you're talking about you could get a Charles Daly, or a Rock Island(which are hella cheap) they're made in the phillipines at a factory that one can only presume made sewing machines. I think they're 350 or 400 dollars. The daly will run you more though. I have a Daly and i loves it.

I like the S&W's, Kimbers and the Springers.

I've owned several Para's and they've all run fine for me.

I've had a S&W 1911PD for a few weeks now; run a couple hundred rounds through it and it works great.

This I can agree with, which is why I dumped it and never bought another one again.
I have friends with other Paras, the models are escaping me atm, and they're all steaming piles of shit as well.

i'm interested in buying a 1911 as well. what's a better approach, new high-end springfield, or used les baer?

I was thinking about getting the trophy match Springfield, which runs around $1300.

For a few hundred more I can get a slighty used Les Baer TRS.

This would be primarily for target practice. Which way would you go?

I had a 5" RIA 1911 I got from gunbroker a couple years ago for $325, reliable little gun, needed a lot of upgrades. Nasty hammer bite too.
