I was just talking to the marketing manager at my work and she was looking at local photographer web sites. Our CEO wants to get some professional pictures taken of our 5 executives for marketing use.

The marketing manager has been calling local freelance photographer and she got a quote of $1800 for 8 pictures. She's called a few different photographers and the pricing has basically been the same for all.

I'm kinda shocked. Is this standard pricing? What do you guys think of this quote?

depending on your market area, and the usage rights it sounds about normal.

    not a shocker

basically they want someone to do all the research, come on site with full set ups (lighting, cameras, etc), literally do everything these execs want (because the execs aren't going to do what the photographer wants), then process the photos and deliver them with full release

    :dunno:

I never said anything about my company thinking the cost is too high.

I didn't know it was that expensive. I'm in the wrong line of work. :hs:

When they say 8 pictures, I assume that means you look over the few hundred (guess) they took and choose 8 you want?

    Sounds about right.

Most people don't value photography, because they don't clearly understand the difference between professional photography and what they do with their little Sony P&S.

Paying for professional work. Get used to it.

Pretty much. I would guess that the photographer would also shoot a couple of different locations as well with each person, depending on the time alloted.

if you have a laptop and Lightroom 2, you can have it auto import and show it almost immediately.

I would love to do that one day. Easy money, not as much work as weddings, and residual pay if they want to use those photos again after the 'contract' expires.

it's usually for a year unless they negotiate the term for longer, which of course is more money.

A nikon buddy of mine in Austin has done a few in the past few years. Mainly for his wife's company and her associates. Each case, they wanted pictures to 'update' their site, and normally signed a contract with him to use x amount of pictures for x amount of time. Afterward, they either re-signed or paid him to come out and redo the pics. Either way, $$$!!! He's not making a ton at it, but if he got into that line or commercial product photography, it'd be a decent living. Couple of hours worth of work, 5-10 pics to the client, and residual income possiblity, sounds like a weinner to me.
