I'm looking to get either a 18-135mm AF-S or the 55-200mm VR as they are both the same price. The 18-135 is a little old so reviews on it don't seem that relevant (a lot of reviews complain about price but it's 1/3 the price it started at now).

Anyone using the 18-135? Ken Rockwell complained of severe distortion but when I demo'd at B&H I didn't notice it was that bad. It was a lot faster than the 55-200 too.

(FYI I have a d40 so my choices are really limited to these two for now. and in terms of zoom either will be okay for me. just asking about performance, especially of the 18-135mm here)

    Thanks

any comments on the distortion? i tested it at b&h and didn't notice anything but when i read reviews it said it was awful at all focal ranges.... not sure who to believe anymore.

I wouldn't get it. My brother got it with his D80 and I just feel like my 18-70 was better built (even though it was a couple of years old by the time the 18-135 came out).

oof that's kinda rough, you're right. seems like you can only tell when you're shooting something with those lines though, i did indoor "busy" snapshots and couldn't tell.

if thats the 18-135 above, keep your kit lens, and get the 55-200, thats ridiculous.

the 18-135 was a great "all purpose" lens with a decent range. I couldn't handle the 18-55/55-200 combo because of the constant desire to change lenses. It makes a good walk about lens.
