    I had my laptop stolen from my work place over the holidays and am replacing it with either a laptop or a desktop.....

    I am looking at Dell, what are your guys' suggestions??? Best Bang for the buck, starting from scratch

    I'd say go with an ASUS M6N if you want a notebook.

    otherwise, $1700 will get you a very sweet desktop.

    15.4" Widescreen isn't big enough????

    for desktop I say build your own.

    Either a Intel 550 w/D915PBLL mobo, 1GB Corsair DDR2, GeForce 6600GT, Seagate 160GB HDD, etc, etc.

    Or an AMD 3500+ w/MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo, 1GB Corsair DDR-400, GeForce 6600GT, Seagate 160GB HDD, etc, etc.

    my overall thoughts on alienware is that they're over-priced, and over-rated.

    Ummm so what do you want? Desktop or laptop? I ask only because they're slightly different.

    I've read up on the AMD athlon 64 3500+ as of late and hear nothing but good things about it, that's what i'll be getting for my next CPU with the MSI mobo that Jolly mentionned. 6600GT ---> best bang for buck card out on the market today. 1GB RAM minimum, corsair should do the trick. If you're striving for performance i'd recommend 2 36.4 raptor drives in RAID 0. 1700$ can build you a wicked desktop BTW. From what you've mentionned you won't be doing too much multi-tasking so i would stick to AMD.

    RAID 0 == bad idea.

    A single 74GB raptor is FASTER and TWICE as reliable as a RAID0 stripe of 36GB raptors.

    Id say get an Asus A8N-Sli and get the PCI-E 6600GT
    one of my friends just ordered the parts for an awesome comp based on those two and a 3500+ for just under $1500
    no monitor though
