17-year-old shoots carjacker who pulled gun on youth's mother

METAIRIE, La. (AP) -- A man with a gun was trying to force a woman out of her car at a fast-food drive-through when the woman's 17-year-old son wrestled the gun away from him and shot him.

Carl Chestnut, 44, of Kenner, is expected to survive wounds to his head and body, and will face armed robbery charges once he is released from East Jefferson General Hospital, Col. John Fortunato, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman, said Monday.

It would have been safer to hand over the keys and let the gunman drive off, Sheriff Harry Lee said Monday.

Fortunato said the 53-year-old woman was in line at an Arby's Roast Beef Restaurant about 1:30 a.m. Monday when Chestnut walked up and pointed a gun at her, demanding their money and the car.

When he leaned inside, aiming the gun with one hand and trying to yank her out with the other, the 17-year-old grabbed the gun, Fortunato said. He said it went off once as they strugged, but did not hit anyone. Once the youth got the gun, he shot Chestnut several times, Fortunato said.

Sylena Rhodes, a corporate officer for Arby's, said, "He saved his mother's life. He's a hero. He's an absolute hero."

Lee acknowledged that the gamble succeeded, but said it was one that could have cost lives. He repeated advice that the best way to survive a holdup is to cooperate.

"Give them the money and give them the keys. You make an insurance payment on your car, and nobody gets shot," he said.

    ---

Fuck that fucking pig, yeah just give in to the demands cause a criminals never shot the victim after taking there shit right?

No its not. Statistically, the best way to survive a robbery is to resist with a gun.

    He's a motherfucking liar.

Sounds like Ontario cops. Yeah, give in to all his demands, its not worth it bla bla bla. Yeah, what if someone doesnt have two-way insurance, and is instead 20 grand in the hole while some scumbag has a car for no effort at all.

Something interesting that wasn't revealed at first with this case, FWIW. After the son shot the would-be-car jacker, an Arby's employee told them they had better leave, so they hopped back in their car and took off. Officers stopped them a short distance from the restaurant.

Also, the shot car jacker is suspected of robbing and murdering his former Trailer park manager.

    is it really?

  13. I think if you have your own gun it is safer.

But if someone else has the gun different statistics.

The gun was possessed by the criminal. That is different to pulling out your own gun to shoot him vs wrestling the gun.

I cant find the specific statistic that gives you the data for each method, but im pretty sure that using a firearm was a lot safer than simply complying.

A funny sidenote: statistically, the worst way you could defend yourself is with a knife.

Isn't the anti-gun argument on this issue based on criminals killed by their intended victim? Not taking into account criminals who survive a shooting, or run, or surrender until police arrive.

The rights of this car-jacker were clearly violated.

What would have happened if the guy just decided to shoot the mom and the son, dump out the bodies and take the car?

Handing someone your keys, wallet, etc, doesn't 100% gurantee that you're going to be a-okay.

    QFT.

And for Sheriff Lee, who is what I would term a Law and Order type, it is a reckless statement. I view it as condoning crime and turning us into a community of powerless victims. Too bad the 17 year-old didn't shoot the perp in the nuts too.

dont forget that if you hand over your shit, come criminal is probley running around with your address, picture, height weight, and whatever other info in your wallet, so there is a chance of them coming after you for calling the cops.
