so i tweaked my back monday and did some light "push press" today.

after looking at the video, my form looks odd.

    hands too close together?
am i taking bar too far below the chin/neck?
    too much leg drive?

it just doesnt look right to me.

you want the bar resting on your shoulders not in your hands. You'll get a higher toss from the bar this way. Then initiate the movement from your hips rather than your knees. You want to use the hamstrings/glutes, not the quads.

^ advice given to me which I think applies to you too.

unless you're training for the leg drive itself , id say the way he is doing it is fine...

If i was training push press for shoulder development, having it in his hands i would htink would hit shoulders moreso than if he rested on his shoulders beforehand like in a clean grip

those would help him lift more weight though right? if he wanted only shoulder development then wouldn't he just do strict presses?

how do you rest it on your shoulders? i don't think I could even fit it onto my shoulders and still be holding the bar... and then how do you get around your chin :dunno:

the same way you would in a front squat/clean position

Watch this- see how the bar is on her shoulders?

gotcha, i dont think i'm nearly flexible enough to do that.

i just hold it similar to kingG and rest it on my chest kinda. maybe that's why it kills my hand. i already hit my chin once by accident :dunno:

thats closer to a strict press than a push press.. you're barely "pushing".. you could throw a lot more weight up if you used momentum and a good leg/hip drive to really get the weight moving.

Push press should be an explosive movement.

that about sums it up, i'm looking for shoulder development more than #'s.

I think i might switch back to strict presses.

maybe i'll try the more explosive push press at some point, just to see my #'s :big grin:

    :werd: !

i did something different at one point and the weight flew up like nothing.

    i was " :o i cheated "

with a push press, does it matter how much leg/hip drive you get so long as the weight locks out over your head? it feels like cheating the shoulders.

looks fine. More of a strict press then a push press but I see nothing wrong with that for shoulder development

Ya it seems like by the time your done pushing you still have almost the entire press to do. You're not carrying the acceleration from the push all the way to the full extension.
