How do i know what i got pierced with?

Its a tongue barbell. I requested nothing special, just got the standard surgical steel barbell. Also what is the normal length of the barbell you get pierced with? I want to buy some that are 5/8ths but im not sure if thats shorter or not.

Typically you will be pierced with 5/8 12ga. After the swelling has gone down you will want to swap out the bar for a shorter length. I have had 1/2 and 3/8 without any pinching.

i was talking to a piercer about doing mine, and he said he'd probably start with a 3/4 12g, and then after it heals well enough i could go to maybe a 1/2 10g.

AB/Nickos: second and third opinions on this???

3/4 is a good size to accomodate for any swelling that occurs.

i really wanted a thicker guage. for some reason, i think it would be more comfortable. i also wanted slightly larger balls on the barbell, and the jewelry i found that i like you can get one size larger with a 10g. i know, the difference is minimal...

    i appreciate the help.

Its been about 2.5 weeks and im still swollen in the center surrounding the barbell... how long should i continue to expect this. Its also slightly sore.

Also is the pit in my tongue going to stay like that... how do i go about getting rid of it?? Thanks for any help.

man. make one small mistake. :hs:

yes it was 3/4 and I had a 5/8 clear ball stud I used when I had to interview or talk to important people.

and even at 3/4, it was still a tad too short. I have a thick tongue to begin with + the swelling.

I had that pit as well. stayed there Im sorry to say. it's still kinda there and I took it out about 6 months ago.

2.5 weeks is a little much to have swelling but some people heal faster than others. I think mine came down to normal after 1 to 1.5 weeks.

Well then im not sure what the problem is. I can live with the pit i guess.

Anyways just around the barbell there is a hard area that is still sore if i touch or play with the ring. How should i go about getting rid of this area? Just wait longer? Could it be infected? What are the signs to look for with it being infected. Thanks again.

good idea would be to stop touching it and playing with it. its a decoration, not a toy!
