Today i did 100lb DB flat x 10 reps, tried the 110lb DB's..could "mount" them well, got 2 reps, could have done more. But since they are so.. "BIG" on the ends, is it even worth the effort trying to mount them and get them up for the first rep?
    I guess i could use a spotter...

im not sure what you are asking? On my heaviest DB set (120's right now) i get a spotter to give me a lift up into position. I can do it without, but i find that it takes a lot of energy that i would rather focus on doing more good reps.

kind of like taking a hand-off when you are barbell benching. Rather than wasting energy lifting the bar off the rack, you save it for the lift :dunno:

That is what i am saying, i am using more energy lifting the db off the ground, thus not lifting as many reps as i could.

    ok problem solved, need spotter

I do 5x5 with my 5th set being 85's (as of this Monday) and I have a spotter help me get anything above 65 into position. If I try to do it by myself, half the time I end up hurting my shoulder and expending any and all energy I have getting the first rep up

i say if you cant get the weight into position then you shouldnt be using it. then again i only use 100's but i figure its all relative with 120's and shit

My gym only goes upto 130lbs for DB's and I rep that for sets of 8-10 usually on flat bench. The problem I find with this though is that it takes so much energy to grip that weight, carry to the bench, position it, and then bring it down after your reps, grip it, carry it back, etc... It is more of a hassle then it is worth.

That is why even though I can rep out the 130's I usually do not go higher than 100's and I just do a solid set of 10-12 and make sure they are concentrated and intense reps. I find this is actually better than going big with weight on the DB's and then having to deal with all the hassle.
If you have a spotter handing them to you though (like on decline DB press) then its another story.
