I'm thinking it might be due to IE7. I had this kind of lag b4 I just installed IE7 3 days ago. How would I pinpoint it? process explorer? Or do I already know my culprit?

Process Explorer is definitely great. But you can just hit ctrl+shift+esc to bring up Task Manager (or right click the Taskbar and choose Task Manager) and sort by cpu in there to find out pretty quicksharp the offending process.

i tried cont+alt+del first but I couldn't really see anything. Guess it dies down by the time it gets there...

You need to give up more details. What leads you to belive the cpu usage
    is at 100%?

the computer was lagging like shit. I ctr+alt+del and went to performance and saw the cpu usage was at 100%. then I clicked processes but I couldn't see anything sucking up a lot of CPU. I was wondering if it was a known IE7 bug. It is happening randomly now.

    Ok, that's a good start.

    Try this then:

Open up task manager > processes tab > View > select collumns > put a check mark in the cpu time box > ok

Now wait until the next time you notice the lag, and go back into task manager > Click on the cpu time header, until it shows the cpu time in descending order.

Now you should be able to see what's been eating up your cpu resources.

Right now I've got system idle process 39:32, svchost.exe 9:52. The reset is neglible. I just had the 100% thing a sec ago. I'm pretty sure it's damn IE cuz IE that little white box in the corner like it was freezing.

I've been hearing about freezeups from people on IE and Firefox lately, and I'm wondering if some recent Microsoft update has screwed things up.

I figured it out. I can use IE7 just fine, but I guess I kept on trying to work on the same project and I was copying something from IE and pasting into word. I did this about 4 times last night just to see if it would be any different after the couple of times. Same result. Jumps up to 100% CPU usage and I have to manually power off b/c ctr+alt+del won't respond.

I don't know what would make it freeze just from copying something from IE7 and pasting into word 2003, but it's definitely messing up my comp.

I was having trouble with msxml6 after installing office ultimate 2007. On a side note, office also royally fubared my visual studio install. I eventually got pissed and scrapped office, vs2005, and all the various vs extensions i had installed. Started fresh with the msdn version of office ent. 2007, made sure not to select groove (i have a feeling it was partly responsible) and reinstalled vs and its sp1. Everything is back to normal now, 3 hours later.
