Sky looks a little blown out. I'd probably say overall bad lighting. There's just too much darkness on her. I know it's B&W, but even if it was color it would still be dark.

im gonna guess you have a crappy monitor or it isn't calibrated because the light on her face, which is truly what matters, looks just fine. yes there are a few shadows here and there but nothing that makes it look dark on her. and the sky usually gets blown out with shots like this and isn't a bad thing.

My personal preference I guess. :hs:

I just can't help but look at that picture and want to stare off into the background because it's so bright and the subject is so dark. It's like a picture you'd take with someone's back to the sun, you want to stare at everything bright behind them.

the only thing that sucks about B&W digital photos is the fact that i can't perfect it in the darkroom. B&W film photography is still the best for this stuff. i could play around a little more with it though. maybe increase the contrast on her face only?

I'm not PS expert (yet :mamoru:) but I'd imagine you could do that and tone down the sky a bit. It would make a world of difference.

I was thinking that too. Fill flash would have helped the dark face.

Brighten up the face a little.

No light in the eyes no care. Portrait shots that don't have a light reflection in the eyes tend to make the subject look dead.

Focus and lighting are the problems here. Looks like the light's coming from behind, which unless you're doing a sillhouette, is a bad idea.
